Lahontan Cutthroat Country – Pyramid Lake and the Lower Truckee

Experience the other beautiful lake in the Reno area, Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River. First drive down the lower Truckee River to meet with the Nature Conservancy and visit and tour their exceptional restoration site on the Lower Truckee River. Then continue on down the Truckee to visit Pyramid Lake. Pyramid is famous for its record setting Lahontan Cutthroat fishery.  On your way to the lake, local fisheries biologist Travis Hawkes (NDOW) will provide you with insightful history of the region and the Lahontan fishery. Once arriving at Pyramid, the Paiute Tribe Natural Resources team will give a presentation and tour of their hatchery facilities, if time permits you will also get to tour the Paiute Cultural History Museum. A variety of sandwiches, chips, and drinks will be provided and are included with the cost of the trip. Cost – $50 for transportation and lunch costs.

Lake Tahoe Science Tour

Join Heather Segale (UC Davis outreach and educator) as she walks you through the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center describing their research on Lake Tahoe. Also she will detail history of the Lake Tahoe fishery and changes to the food web. After that head to the town of Truckee where you will meet local California State Parks environmental manager Dan Shaw. Dan will guide you to the Lake Tahoe Rim Dam. After your visit to the dam you will take a scenic drive around the rugged West Shore of the lake and stop at the Taylor Creek visitor center to see the kokanee salmon run just outside South Lake Tahoe. A variety of sandwiches, chips, and drinks will be provided and are included with the cost of the trip – $50 for transportation and lunch costs.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Trip

Pyramid Lake is famous for its world class and trophy Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT) fishing. Join local fishing guide Rob Anderson (https://www.pyramidlakeflyfishing.com/guideservice/) for a partially guided fishing trip for LCT. Rob will provide the gear needed (flies, rods, fishing ladders, float tubes) and get anglers pointed in the right direction for fishing this unique lake. The cost of this trip is only $120 for guided fishing and transportation. Rob will provide a barbecue lunch for all participants. Our trip will leave at approximately 6:30 AM and return at approximately 3:00 PM on Friday, October 4th. Signups are limited to 20 people.

Things to bring:

  • Waders/wading boots
  • Appropriate attire based upon the weather forecast (Sutcliffe, Nevada)
  • A printed copy of your Pyramid Lake fishing permit. Participants are responsible for purchasing a required fishing permit available at the following website: https://pyramidlake.us/permits. The $120 cost for this trip does not include the cost of this permit ($12 for a day permit). Note that a State of Nevada fishing license is not required for fishing at Pyramid Lake, nor will it suffice in substitution for a Pyramid Lake fishing permit. Participants who possess a longer-term Pyramid Lake fishing permit (such as a seasonal permit or a 3-day permit) need not purchase a day permit specifically for this event.
